Building My Reputation Online

Steve TroyWhy do I need a website?   Why now?   How did it happen?  -  I have asked myself these same questions.  I am not a celebrity nor a purveyor of goods or services to the masses who populate the Internet.  I am a business consultant and investor whose business is 100% derived from personal referrals and relationships.  However, through my affiliation with The Jar Group, an interactive marketing agency based in DUMBO, Brooklyn, I have become enlightened.  The bottom line is that even a private entrepreneur in today’s business world needs a calling card.  In my humble view, the 21st century business card can be defined as the internet search results generated when one’s name or trade name is searched or “Googled”.  Without proactive efforts on your behalf, the results of these searches for your name may not portray your image in the positive and relevant manner that you would like. Just as I used to carefully consider the image conveyed by my old business card, I am now concerned that my identity online is under my control and accurately reflects my business and reputation.

So, back to those Jar folks in DUMBO – they have developed a turn-key solution for proactive reputation management.   Their solution is called SearchEgoTM (full details are available on The JAR Group’s website) and it has done several great things for me including creation of this website. The initial focus of my SearchEgo engagement entailed creation of a website and other relevant online touchpoints across the social media landscape.  The purpose of these efforts is to increase the visiblility of favorable search results around my name and business and to provide accessibility to persons I have met and whom I would like to be aware of my professional activities.  After creating my online persona, the SearchEgo team continues to work to update online sources with current information about my company while providing me with a monthly dashboard detailing the results of their online efforts on my behalf.  Though my foray online is early stage I have been positively surprised by the number of former colleagues and contacts who have reached out to me online to renew professional acquaintances and explore current mutual interests.  THANKS JAR!
